emailIt may be a little out of season, but having let the dust settle on the recent headlines regarding sickness absence during holiday we thought we would focus this week’s email update on what the ruling in the case of Pereda v Madrid, where the European Court of Justice (ECJ) found that a period of sickness whilst on holiday does not count towards the minimum period of 4 weeks’ paid annual leave under the EU Working Time Directive, actually means for employers.

emailThere were several peculiar cases that came to our attention this week which highlighted how using Facebook can get one into a spot of bother with the law; the first is the report of a woman arrested for ‘poking’ a fellow Facebook user. All well and good when you are genuine friends perhaps, but this particular lady had a restraining order against her and ‘poking’ her victim was deemed to be in breach of this!

Will you still need me when I’m 65?

Email updateWith the recent ruling by the High Court in the Age UK case (formerly known as Heyday) that the Government had sufficiently set out its social policy aims regarding the labour market and so the normal retirement age of 65 is legitimate and lawful, many employers will have let out a huge sigh of relief.
