Lay Offs and Short Time Working
Many companies which experience a temporary reduction in workload may include a clause in their contract allowing lay offs or short time working.
A ‘lay off’ is when employees are not provided with work (and not paid) by their employer for a temporary period in time.  Short time working is when employees are laid off for a number of contractual days each week, or for a number of hours during a working day. In order to either lay off  or give employees short time working, there must to be an explicit clause in the employees contract allowing the employer to do so.
