HR staff are also known as Personnel (and this word is often accompanied by a sneer). Occasionally HR Managers like to think of themselves as Human Capital Management Professionals, which presumably makes them more important than the rest of us lowly HR bods. HR is also sometimes referred to as Human Remains or Human Remnants...
HR staff usually have responsibility in a business for the management of people, i.e. 'the hiring, the bit inbetween and the firing!' To avoid an excessive in-tray though, the modern approach to HR is to delegate fully thereby avoiding most of the work involved with hiring, the bit in between, and also the firing. Their pay has gone up as a result. That's called progress... (and before you get on the phone and have a go, just remember that we're HR as well!).
