Disability Equality Scheme
The Disability Discrimination Act 2005 introduced (amongst other things) a public sector duty to promote disability equality. This duty came into effect in December 2006 and requires public sector employers to publish a DES (Disability Equality Scheme) which, in a nutshell, sets out how they intend to comply with their disability equality duties; shows how impact assessment has been measured; proposes the steps it will take to achieve equality; shows what it is doing in terms of gathering the necessary information; and includes plans for review and amendment of the DES as appropriate. At the end of each 3 year period the public sector employer must also then publish a report describing actions taken and outcomes achieved.
