Busy doing what?

Busy doing what?Everywhere I go I hear how busy everyone is. And I'm busy too. And the whole world is busy being busy. In fact were all so busy that work/life balance for many is now just a dream rather than any imminent reality. But we're busy doing what exactly?

  • Spinning in circles?
  • Repeating what we said yesterday?
  • Chasing our tails?
  • Talking about the need to be busy?
  • Correcting errors caused by too much 'busyness'?
  • Rewriting our fast changing to do lists?
  • Sending 10 texts to sort out a meeting when one phone call would do?
  • Re-doing the jobs we thought we'd ticked off yesterday?
  • Reminding ourselves of what we were doing when we let that latest email 'ping' distract our work?
  • Seeing and meeting everyone we know because we all know networking is really important?
  • Tweeting and posting left, right and centre because someone somewhere said that was the way to go?
  • Meeting to catch up, meeting to debrief, meeting to plan, meeting to arrange a meeting?
  • Picking up all the dropped balls as a result of overestimating our juggling abilities?
  • Deleting our spam, organising our inbox?
  • Working out why we were copied into 10 emails that seem to have no relevance at all to us?
  • Fiddling and twiddling with endless bits of frustrating technology to get it work in the way we want it to work for us?

And busy being busy makes us feel exactly what…..? Busy!! Or perhaps... wanted, needed, productive, forward thinking, achieving, involved, valued, valuable, focussed, essential, driven...

But are we really? Or are we quite often just busy being busy with no particular thought for endless wasted time due to inefficient activities, unnecessary activities, poor time management, and a lack of questioning and re-evaluating what we are doing or how we are doing it?

Now if we could all just bottle and sell that time spent simply being busy, we'd all be millionaires by Christmas!

But no more time to write… I have emails to sort, meetings to arrange, contacts to speak to, to do lists to write and texts to send... hey ho!
